Defining The Problem

Mental illness is the leading cause of disabilities in the United States. The Mental Health System is failing the very people that it has purposed to serve. Today, as a result of the poorly executed policies surrounding de-institutionalization that have been executed over the past forty years there are great numbers of people in the community who have not had the opportunity to recover, because they are not truly integrated into society. They are often overmedicated, confined to supervised settings with no say over their lives or treatment and, if employed at all, placed in dead end jobs. This is because the system is operating on a medical model that focuses on crisis management and treatment of immediate symptoms, while assuming that real recovery from mental illness is not possible. Consumer Leadership Forum (CLF), as a consumer organization want people who think or feel something is wrong with them, a family member, or even love ones, know that there is a place they can come for help/advice and feel comfortable. CLF wants to provide them with resources of places where they can get help and support with their issues.
